Untuk menampilkan halaman HTML dengan benar, browser web harus mengetahui karakter (character encoding) untuk digunakan.
Apa Pengkodean Karakter?
ASCII adalah standar pengkodean karakter pertama (juga disebut set karakter). Ini mendefinisikan 127 karakter alfanumerik yang berbeda yang dapat digunakan di internet.
Nomor ASCII didukung (0-9), huruf Inggris (AZ), dan beberapa karakter khusus seperti!

ANSI (Windows-1252) adalah set karakter asli Windows. Ini didukung 256 kode karakter yang berbeda.
ISO-8859-1 adalah karakter default diatur untuk HTML 4. Hal ini juga didukung 256 kode karakter yang berbeda.
Karena ANSI dan ISO terbatas, pengkodean karakter default diubah menjadi UTF-8 di HTML5.

Mengapa XHTML?
Banyak halaman di internet berisi "buruk" HTML.
Kode HTML ini bekerja dengan baik di hampir semua browser (bahkan jika tidak mengikuti aturan HTML):
Pasar saat ini terdiri dari teknologi browser yang berbeda. Beberapa browser dijalankan pada komputer, dan beberapa browser berjalan pada ponsel atau perangkat kecil lainnya. Perangkat yang lebih kecil sering kekurangan sumber daya atau kekuatan untuk menafsirkan "buruk" markup.
